Jay graduated from Colorado State University in 1964 with a degree in landscape and nursery management. He briefly taught horticulture at the university but left to work with the construction team on the Robert Trent Jones designed Spyglass Hill. He quickly rose to the position of construction superintendent on Jones%u2019 courses
In 1967, he left to work with George Fazio and Desmond Muirhead. In 1972 he signed on as a designer with Jack Nicklaus. In 1983, after 10 years with Nicklaus, Morrish left to pursue a golf design business of his own. Most of his work was done in partnership with PGA Tour player Tom Weiskopf Their partnership lasted until 1994, In 12 years they designed more than two dozen courses, including Loch Lomond in Scotland and TPC Las Colinas in Irving, Texas.
After Jay and Tom Weiskopf partnership was dissolved, Jay continued to design many new golf courses including Tehama for Clint Eastwood in Carmel, California; Stone Canyon in Tuscon, Arizona and Pine Dunes in East Texas. All of these were done with the assistance of his new business partner, son Carter Morrish.
